About the Artist

Yulia Ivashkina (born 1982) belongs to the young generation of Russian artists who started working in 2000’s. She mainly works with painting, graphics, objects and sound installations. In her works Ivashkina researches production and representation of imaginary perceptions. Ivashkina’s first solo exhibition has been organized within Winzavod Contemporary Art Center’s ‘’Start’’ program for young artists. In this project, through constructing complicated installation, Yulia studied imaginary spaces as echoes of non-existing past, images of lost and disappeared places forming unsteady borders between real and imaginary world. In 2012, her solo show In the Rooms was shown at pop/off/art gallery in Moscow. The exhibition was based on her long-term project Interior_N, underlining seriality in its name. A number of paintings from Interior_N series was shown at Practice for Everyday Life exhibition curated by Josef Bakstein and David Thorp at Calvert 22, London. Ivashkina has participated in multiple group exhibitions, such as 3rd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2009) and 2nd Moscow Biennale for Young Art (2010). Her works were shortlisted for Strabag ArtAward International in Vienna (2012). Her next solo project Feel the breath of the New Architecture took place at pop/off/art gallery in 2019. This project appealed to architectural design as a part of modern life, from the inhuman construction of new residential areas and their infrastructure to the concepts of creative cellular geometry.

Ivashkina was born in Olovyannaya village, Chita Region in 1982. She received a BA in Fine Arts at the Sholokhov Moscow State University of Humanities (2008) and later graduated from Moscow’s Institute of Contemporary Art (2009). She also studied at the University of Huelva, Spain (UHU). In 2015, Ivashkina created an artistic group […] Labs in collaboration with Sergey Voldikov and Sergey Ogurtsov. The group primarily works with sound as a visual language. The project was supported by Centre for Creative Industries Fabrika and received the Fabrika Workshops Award. Ivashkina lives and works in Moscow and Huelva, Spain.
