About the Artist

While studying at the university, the son of the famous Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia met the talented Afra Bianchin, who later became his wife and chief co-author. The duo achieved their creative success relatively quickly: their Soriana armchair and sofa for Cassina made a splash in 1969 when it won the Compasso D’Oro Prize for the design of an outstanding example of Italian modernism. The half-century tandem with Afra turned out to be extremely successful. The bright couple worked for all the leading Italian manufacturers including Flos, Cassina, B&B Italia and Knoll. Similarly to many designers of the 1960s, they focused on exploring new technologies and material to create unique and outstanding designs.

Afra and Tobia Scapa received the Postmodern Italian Architect and Design Awards, the Compasso D’Oro Prize in 1969 and the main prize at the International Design Forum in 1992. Their works can be found in numerous museums in the United States and Europe, such as the MoMa in New York and the Louvre Museum in Paris. They always focused on combining the technical and aesthetical possibilities of materials to achieve non-trivial, unique and memorable forms. Their designs include architectural projects, furniture, art glass and many other everyday objects.
