About the Artist

Russian artist, painter, graphic artist, sculptor.

Alexander Kosolapov was born in 1943 in Moscow. In 1968 he graduated from the Moscow Art and Industry Academy named after S. G. Stroganov, faculty of monumental sculpture. Until 1974 he lived in Moscow and worked with artists Leonid Sokov and Boris Orlov. The first objects in the style of pop art were created in the period from 1972 to 1974, then Kosolapov worked on works with a social connotation. In 1975, he emigrated to New York, one of the first artists in the circle of social artists, where he has been living and working ever since.

The paintings and sculptures of Alexander Kosolapov are in the collections of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Albertina Museum (Vienna, Austria), MoMA (New York), New York Public Library, the Sebastian Bertrand Gallery (Geneva, Switzerland) and many others. Since the mid-70s, one of the key figures of social art, painter, graphic artist, sculptor. The works are based on an ironic-radical combination of recognizable symbols and stereotypes of Soviet ideology and global mass culture. Playing with images, the artist debunks both Soviet political myth-making and capitalist commodity fetishism.
