Murrine Opache plate
The vases were invented by Carlo Scarpa in 1940 and since then the Venini manufactory has created approximately 8 pieces per year. Each vase is signed with the name of the author - Carlo Scarpa, the name of the manufactory - Venini, the year of creation and issue number.
Murrine technology is the most complex technology for creating glass objects. This is due to the limited choice of sand and the complexity of the technological process, when the future product is assembled on a sheet like a mosaic from pre-prepared solid pieces of glass of the selected color and sent to the oven. It is important to seize the moment so that all the elements sinter together, but do not spread. At this moment, the product is removed from the oven and, as it cools, a special hard stick is used to give it the desired shape. The grooves from the stick can be easily felt on the front side of the finished product. Each of the produced vases is unique in its own way; the resulting texture and tactile properties of each product are different.
The auction price of glass objects produced by Venini during Scarpa's art direction exceeds 200,000 euros.
Carlo Scarpa (1906 - 1978).
One of the greatest designers and architects of the 20th century. Scarpa was born in Venice and spent much of his early childhood in Vicenza before his family returned to Venice following the death of his mother in 1919. Scarpa studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice.
From 1932 to 1947 he was art director of the Venini glass factory, Murano. Largely thanks to him, the ideas of modernism were embodied in glass, and the Venini manufactory played a crucial role in this.
