Sergei Alferov was born and raised in Tashkent, in a Russian family of hereditary intellectuals. He entered the Tashkent Art College, but was expelled for the "non-canonical", free and abstract style of writing. After several unsuccessful attempts to start exhibiting in his native city, the young author decided in the early 70s to leave for Moscow, where many well-known nonconformist artists worked.
In the capital, Sergei at first lived in the apartments of acquaintances and workshops of his colleagues. He was part of the "Belyaevskaya Commune" of artists.
An important event in his life was participation in the "Bulldozer Exhibition" on September 15, 1974, the largest action of unofficial art in the USSR. Then, on September 29, 1974, there was the 2nd autumn viewing of paintings in the open air in the forest park "Izmailovo". In 1975 - "Preliminary apartment views for the All-Union Exhibition."
After that, Sergei Alferov became a member of the so-called "painting section" at the Moscow City Trade Union Committee of Graphic Artists, which allowed many hitherto unrecognized authors to receive the status of an "official" artist.
The entire creative path of Sergei Alferov is an interweaving of different mythologies - in the picturesque, everyday, ethnographic and metaphysical senses. As he became acquainted with one or another facet of world philosophy, Alferov instantly reflected it in his works. Africa, the shamanic North, the East, Asia, Indian America - all this is reflected in the artist's works. One mythology organically flows into another, the symbols are layered on top of each other, inviting the viewer on a fascinating journey through the past civilizations that have survived to this day.
Being already a mature master, Alferov at the first opportunity left for the mountains - to gain spiritual experience. The whole Pamir came out, visited local sages, lived in communes - among the same seekers of mystical revelations like him.
A significant role in the formation of Sergei Alferov - as a person and as an artist - was played by his friendship with another of the brightest representatives of the unofficial art of those years - Anatoly Zverev. Communication with a real living genius liberated Alferov creatively and finally convinced him that he was on the right track. By the end of the 70s, Alferov entered the circle of the founding fathers of Soviet nonconformism. He was an idol for his generation of connoisseurs and connoisseurs of contemporary art.
The life of Sergei Alferov was tragically cut short in 2004, when interest in his work was unusually high. At the age of 53, the artist tragically died on the street "under unclear circumstances."
