Margarita Varakina is an artist from Moscow, a graduate of the Higher School of Economics (Design and Contemporary Art) and a master's student in Contemporary Art.
Her research focuses on behavioural models and social identity of modern man in post-Soviet space.
In her projects, she redefines the phenomenon of excessive decoration and eclectic decoration in a philistine culture. In this context, she is interested in the languages of the spontaneous aesthetic systems generated by mass culture and kitsch which reflect the thinking languages of the communities. In her installations the artist creates situations of encounter and interaction between spectators belonging to different social groups on this basis.
In her latest series of paintings, the artist redefines the concept of the multitude and finds in the image of the crowd a new agency.
