The series "Life" and "Prayer" by Natalia Gudovich are images of ancient gods and Christian saints, created by a neural network in the style of a Proto-Renaissance fresco. The artist selects and edits the details, eventually getting a generated image in which a prayer for the soul of humanity and religious discourse materialize through the work of the ai algorithm.
The painting is executed on an icon-painting board covered with gesso, thus the media mixes and unites the pictorial traditions of different confessions.
The meaning of the image was studied by many philosophers of the 20th and 21st centuries - for example, Bernard Stigler and Jacques Derrida, inheriting Husserl's phenomenology, introduce the term "image-object", which has duration in space-time. Such a tool helps us create reality and the future, but does not provide answers to existential questions.
The main question is "what is the soul?" remains open to both the artist and the viewer. If artificial intelligence is able to create images that embody the highest human values, such as love, freedom, faith, tradition, then we can argue that behind this is a certain quintessence of meanings and symbols, but not true sacredness, the essence of things, transcendence or absolute.
