David Lachapelle was born in Connecticut in 1963 and studied at the North Carolina School of Art. Initially, Lachapelle wanted to become an artist, but he began experimenting with photography and developed a unique technique of hand-coloring negatives to create a wide range of colors before processing the film. At the age of 17, he moved to New York City and had his first photo exhibition at Gallery 303. After that, Andy Warhol noticed his work and hired him to work for Interview magazine. Thanks to his mastery of color and unique composition, Lachapelle's work began to gain international attention. His staged portraits and still lifes challenged traditional photography and quickly became popular. In 1991, The New York Times wrote: "Lachapelle will undoubtedly influence the creativity of a new generation... just as Mr. Avedon did with his work."During his prolific career, Lachapelle has created iconic portraits of many celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Lil' Kim, Tupac, Britney Spears, Madonna, the Kardashian family, and Naomi Campbell. In addition to his work for well-known publications, he also engages in artistic photography. A significant part of Lachapelle's body of work deals with themes of death and is full of surreal references to art history and religious iconography. In 2011, Lachapelle hosted a major exhibition of his new works at the Lever House in New York and later organized retrospectives at the Puerto Rico Museum of Modern Art, Hangaram Design Museum in Seoul, and Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague.
