Alexey Vasiliev is a contemporary Russian artist. He lives and works in Kaluga.
Participant of three biennials of contemporary art, more than fifty personal (including museum) and group exhibitions in Russia and abroad. His works are in private and public collections (Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, Germany). In 2019 he entered the list of the best contemporary artists in Russia (Arteex).
Alexey Vasiliev, as an author, is in a state of constant “self-brewing” and hermetic existence. His established image is a reclusive or ascetic artist, where his immediate environment becomes the subject of reflection.
“If modern society requires constant renewal, then I am methodical in my insistence on one thing. It is indecent for me to keep finger on the pulse, the artist's code is like a samurai code nowadays. I am not chasing time, my strategy is like a stick stuck in a fast-flowing stream, and things that sticks to it - leaves, seaweed and debris - appears as my sample and becomes the subject of research. "
Vasiliev, as an anthropologist, documents his feelings. The visuality and the text become organic whole and turn into very personal notes and sketches - sometimes real, sometimes imaginary. Paper, canvas, walls, concrete and other surfaces which the artist draws on are some kind of pages of different scales and textures, and exhibitions are personal diaries that have opened in public space.
