About the Artist

Lafer released the first MP chair, the MP-01 in 1961. It had a T-shaped steel base covered with thin slabs of solid rosewood and a seat upholstered with layers of foam rather than springs. This invention gave Lafer the leverage he needed at the time to build his company. He had established himself as a designer with numerous patents and a reputation for innovation and design. Lafer named his furniture company Lafer MP, where MP stood for Moveis Patentados, or Patented Furniture.

Percival Lafer was born in 1936 and graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at Mackenzie University in São Paulo. Still very young, having just graduated from university, he had to take over his father's furniture company, Móveis Lafer. Percival Lafer's work as an industrial designer left an indelible mark on the furniture industry in Brazil. Since his first project, his work has always been marked and original.

In his opinion, every piece of furniture should reflect the the state of the art applied to innovative ideas.

“The furniture is supported by a thin piece of wood because it has a stee core”
