The Idealised City
Edition of 5 + 1 AP
Filippo Minelli (b. 1983, Italy) is a contemporary artist working internationally, analysing and researching contemporary landscape and its politics to create installations and performances documented through photography and video.
Minelli’s visual language incorporates digital and natural landscapes as well as an attunement to vernacular. Situated between photo-documentation, painting, and performative interventions in public space, his work plays with the frame as a signifier. Architectural elements become portals to the environment, with a gaze that moves towards the outskirts of cities, liminal zones and blank advertising. Supported by anthropological research that crosses borders and contexts, his practice unpacks sites that are clouded with political undertones or aesthetic disruptions. Interested in how landscapes both mask and reveal particular ideologies, Minelli decontextualizes violence, iconography and place by merging an amalgam of artificial imagery (such as stock pictures, spray paint and man-made objects) with natural elements (flowers, sunlight and weather conditions).
