Blueprint series
Nikita Dusto (b. 1991) is a St. Petersburg-based artist who works with the category of indeterminacy through graffiti, abstraction, classical painting, video, and installation. Unlike many graffiti writers who primarily focus on honing their style and replication of their own names, Dusto embraces both formal and conceptual experimentation. In classic graffiti the artist doesn’t prioritize the legibility of the script but rather its structural elements. This approach has allowed Dusto to gradually distill the written symbol into a minimalist, serpentine line, which serves as an ideological bridge between his street practice and studio work. Through abstract painting, Dusto has transitioned to traditional easel painting techniques, where the line remains a dominant element, carrying various formal, semantic, and conceptual weights. His works explore themes of historical past, the museification of street art, and the reflection of contemporary reality using the methods and techniques of easel painting.
