To the Comforter
Gor Chahal has been working in the paradigm of the churching of contemporary art for over 10 years. In the author's interpretation, the project "To the Comforter" has several connotations. We recognize the abstract expressionism of Cy Twombly, his "flowers" cycle. At the same time, it reflects reflections on the image of the Holy Spirit. The hummingbird is an unusual bird that feeds on flower nectar, the only one among winged animals that can fly in all directions: right, left, forward and backward. Its heart, in relation to the size of its body, is the largest among all living creatures on earth. It occupies up to a third of the volume of their tiny bodies. Having learned about this, the author wondered whether the Holy Apostles really saw the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove? Perhaps there are no hummingbirds in Palestine?
Gor Chahal was born in 1961 in Moscow.
In 1985 he graduated with honors from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute with a degree in Applied Mathematics. He is an artist, author of poetry, musical and poetic performances, one of the pioneers of multimedia art in Russia. Since 1990s, he has been exploring Christian themes, combining contemporary art, scientific methods and theological discourse.
In the late 1980s – early 1990s he was a member of the Moscow underground art and rock scene. He was a founder of the performance groups "Parallel Actions" (1985-1987) and "Theatrpost" (1987-1988), held a series of actions together with the art group "Champions of the World" (1988). In 1989, he played the main role in Oleg Teptsov's film "The Initiate".
In 1990 he had his first solo exhibition at the First Gallery (Moscow). In 1995-1996 he got a scholarship at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, in 2004 - at the Museum Quarter in Vienna. In 2014 he became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts, in 2022 he became a corresponding member of the Department of the newest art trends at the Russian Academy of Arts.
