Alexey Bogolepov was born in 1985 in Vyborg.
Artist, photographer, art theorist. Lives and works in St. Petersburg.
His projects combine architectural photography, sculpture, video art and installation into an expanded study of modernism in the post-Soviet space and beyond.
Graduated from the University of Alaska in the USA with a degree in Art History (2007).
Graduate of the Photography as Research program at the FotoDepartament Foundation (2014).
Bogolepov uses documentary photography to describe the models and social processes of post-Soviet reality. Based on a general interest in architecture, he organizes his practice around research into designed and programmed urban space, paying particular attention to the desynchronization of form and content. Through historical and archival research, Bogolepov analyzes the modernist organizational complex, reducing its elements to abstract categories, which he uses as a guide for photographic and sculptural works containing political commentary on the themes of the structure of power, the ideology of space, the scientific method, planning practices and systemic vision.
As an author of texts, he published articles on the history and transformation of modernist ideas in the art of the 20th-21st centuries, the influence of Zen Buddhism and the scientific picture of the world on the artistic process.
He has been involved in photography for over 20 years. One of the most sought-after architectural photographers in St. Petersburg, his photographs have been repeatedly published in magazines (Project Baltia, Tatlin) and online publications (archi.ru, archdaily) and have become part of historical exhibitions at the Shchusev Museum of Architecture and the Museum Complex in Razliv. In 2023, the project documented by Alexey received the "Arkhitekton" award from the St. Petersburg Union of Architects.
He is a professional photographer of exhibition and reproduction photography of works of art - a number of St. Petersburg private and museum collections and a large part of the contemporary art scene of St. Petersburg have passed through his lens.
Alexey Bogolepov's solo exhibitions were held at the Shchusev Museum of Architecture in Moscow (2014), the FotoDepartament gallery in St. Petersburg (2015), and the Triangle gallery in Moscow (2016).
