Daria Kalugina draws on fragments from her childhood and personal family memories as the starting point for her art. By weaving together various events, the artist constructs a visual embodiment of childhood impressions that resist easy verbal description. Kalugina explores
the convergence of a child’s world and an adult’s world — two realms that perceive reality in fundamentally different ways. Incorporating personal experience into her projects allows her to reframe questions of growing up and collective memory. Working in acrylic, pastel, and pencil, Kalugina merges painting and drawing just as childhood memories merge with an adult perspective on life. A multiexposure technique lends her works an ephemeral quality.
