About the artist

Vladimir Chernyshev is an artist from Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Heinvestigates national traditions and forms of cultural memory, relationshipsbetween city and country, transformations of archeptical images in modernculture. Vladimir began to work as a street artist in 2010, but then graduallymoved away from street art. He concentrated on long-term research projects.

He has been working on “Derelict village” project since 2013 Within thisproject he has visited countries abandoned with people in different regions ofRussia. Initially the strategy of interaction with country was inherited frompractices of street art. The artist has worked out his own system of symbolswhich he painted on a desert houses facades. But then this system began todevelop in other forms and media (videos, photos and photo documentations,installations). The main goal of the project is creating a series of drawingson abandoned houses demonstrating darkness and sacredness of traditionalcountry culture’s parting.

Vladimir Chernyshev participated in European Biennial of Contemporary ArtManifesta and Moscow International Biennale for Young Art. He was a part oflong- and short-lists of prestigious Russian awards in the region of modernart. Vladimir became a winner of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art grantprogram in support of emerging Russian artists.
