Ivan Novikov
Ivan Novikov is one of the most notable representatives of the emerging generation in Russian contemporary art scene working with painting and installation. His study of the relationships between a human being and nature has had a particular impact on his creative process. Ivan conducts a research on the boarder of theory and history of art, world and in particular Asian history, politics and religion, and matters of communication between anthropology and art. Ivan Novikov was born in 1990 in Moscow. He graduated from the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow and the Baza Institute of Contemporary Art. Since 2014 he has taught at the Baza as a head of a painting department. In 2015 he became a co-founder of the artist-run-space "Red Centre", a progressive exhibition space for young artists at the Red October manufacture. Novikov has had a number of solo exhibitions, among which are: Why? (START, CCA Winzavod, 2011), Lien Xo (pop/off/art gallery, Moscow, 2016), Shining Mycelium (VCCA, Voronezh, 2016), Double-edged (pop/off/art gallery, Moscow, 2018), and has participated in numerous important group projects such as Manifesta 10 (First Cadet Corps, St. Petersburg, 2014), "REPAIR" (ROT, Kassel, 2012), the 5th Moscow International Bienniale of Young Art (2016), the Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art ("Garage" Museum, Moscow, 2017). He was the winner of the "Garage" Museum grant programme (2015, 2016) and a winner of the Competition in "Regional Project" nomination of the Innovation Award (2018), the first and most important award for contemporary visual art in Russia. Novikov also was a finalist of the annual V-A-C Foundation and MHKA Antwerpen Russian art purchasing program (2015, 2018). Novikov is also known as a curator (2012 Sorry, could I try next time? He lives and works in Moscow.
