The “Garden” series reveals the idea of artistic perception through the energy of color. Both in text and in painting, Pushnitsky abandons the plot line. However, it does not exclude the figure of an observer who is outside, like a certain author’s voice behind the scenes, broadcasting the individual thoughts of the artist.
“I conceived the text and I thought about choosing some illustrations for it. My figurative works were not suitable, because each figurative work is a separate story, but I needed an overall state that would support not individual plots, but the entire text. I decided to make a small-format painting that carries images of nature, memories and the absence of specific bodies. The main thing about this is that it is fragmentary, like the world, which is also infinitely long and changeable; our eyes, our consciousness can never accommodate it entirely.”
Vitaly Pushnitsky
Russian artist. Born in 1967 in Leningrad, USSR. After graduating from the Leningrad Secondary Art School, he studied at the Graphics Department of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1988–1994). He specialized in book graphics. Today, Pushnitsky is actively experimenting with new techniques and materials, creating installations and multimedia objects in addition to painting. Whatever technique he works in, in his works classical pictorial languages are combined with contemporary art strategies. Through his work he probes space, time, and the history of art and civilizations. With the enormous variability of the images and plots used, Pushnitsky invariably distinguishes a particular melancholic contemplative mood. He currently lives and works in St. Petersburg.
Pushnitsky is one of the leading contemporary artists, which confirmed by his presence in the list of the most influential artists, compiled by Phaidon in 2011. The artist had solo shows at the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, etc.
