Victor Alimpiev was born in Moscow in 1973. He graduated from the Moscow Art School in Memory of 1905, the New Strategies in Contemporary Art School of the Institute of Contemporary Art, and also took a two-month course at Valand Academy of Fine Arts in Gothenburg, Sweden. Today, Alimpiev is one of the most notable and interesting figures on contemporary Russian art scene. He participated in the 1stand 2ndMoscow Biennale, 4thBerlin Biennale, Venice Film Festival (2005, 2010). In 2005, the Tate Modern Museum acquired his Sweet Nightingalevideo. In 2007, the Pompidou Center included his My Breath video in its collection. In 2008, he was nominated for the Kandinsky Prize (“Project of the Year” nomination). Alimpiev's artistic approach is largely derived from his equal interest in working with painting and video, demonstrating the similarity of the techniques. By repeated revision and reproduction of images, he relieves them from layers of superfluous meanings. As a result, they acquire a fascinating and mysterious quality.
