José Zanine Caldas was a key figure in Brazilian modernism and one of the rare visionaries who shaped the identity of his country during his time.
Caldas’s pieces — sensual and powerful — were always created with the intent of unveiling the potential and innate beauty of each fragment of wood, some of which were never replicated.
He transformed remnants of "found trees" left behind by deforestation into furniture with expressive forms, engaging the local community of canoe makers in the process. His projects were always guided by a deep respect for nature — the forest as a source of life and strength — as well as local traditions and craftsmanship, long before discussions on decoloniality became widespread. He championed a new, conscious approach to material usage and sustainability, turning his work into a protest against humanity’s dominance over nature.
