One of the most prominent representatives of the Moscow art scene of the 90s. In the 1970s, he studied to become an architect at the Kazan Civil Engineering Institute, worked as a photographer, and attended VGIK as a volunteer student. In the mid-1980s, he ended up in the “Kindergarten” artist squat. He worked in workshops in Furmanny Lane, was a member of the musical art group “Central Russian Upland”, and also participated in Kuryokhin’s show “Pop Mechanics”.
In the late 1980s, Volkov became one of the most sought-after young and relevant artists from the USSR in the West, with many exhibitions and fellowships abroad. Volkov was a participant in the famous first Sotheby's auction in Moscow in 1988. In 1990, his works were presented in the USSR pavilion at the 44th Venice Biennale. The artist’s works are in the collections of the Ludwig Museum (Cologne, Germany), the Museum of Art (Bern, Switzerland), the Denver Art Museum, the National Gallery (Melbourne, Australia), the Volker Diehl Gallery (Berlin, Germany), the Pompidou Center (Paris, France), State Tretyakov Gallery, Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
