The Silent Room
Elena Nikitina is a multidisciplinary artist working across various genres, including painting, drawing, installation, photography, video, and object. Her practice frequently incorporates collage, blending traditional techniques with unexpected materials such as wire, lime, charcoal from open fires, and film stock.
Elena Nikitina’s work focuses on philosophical questions concerning the nature of reality, the structure of the universe, and the organisation of human society. Her interests range widely — from astronomy and quantum physics to the boundaries of human potential and the lives of animals. Developing her projects often requires years of research and reflection on a chosen theme; as a result, her works and exhibitions are frequently accompanied by her own written texts.
The artist spends much of her time in nature, working in her studio located in the village in the taiga near Vladivostok. This close connection with the natural world is reflected in her paintings and drawings, which often convey the unique qualities of the Russian Far East landscape. Drawing on the Primorsky school of painting, Elena Nikitina extends its legacy into the realm of abstraction, striving to move beyond conventional notions of beauty and deliberately embracing an expressive simplicity of form and line.
