Katerina Kovaleva was born in 1966 in Moscow. After graduating from the Moscow art school, she studied at the Russian State University of Design and Applied Arts (formal Stroganov University) and the Moscow Polygraphic Institute (Moscow Academy of Printing), worked in the field of book graphics, graphic and interior design. Katerina Kovaleva is the author of a number of mosaic works in Moscow, New York, Groningen (Holland). She experiments with various materials, often using the collage method in painting and graphics.
Selected projects:
2017 - Antarctic Biennale. The exhibition of drawings by Katerina Kovaleva made in Antarctica took place in the Drake Passage, on board the ship "Akademik Vavilov". The works were later shown at the 57th Venice Biennale.
2018 - The large retrospective exhibition by K. Kovaleva "Routes of Memory", Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
2021 - "History of Disease. The Right to Rest", Rosfoto Museum (St. Petersburg). The project explores the connection between the history of the country and an individual, turning to archival materials, documents and artifacts of the past.
2022-2023 - "Waiting Zone", 18th century Salt Barn, Tarusa and the Moscow Museum of the History of the Gulag.
2024 - Installation "If It Rains. Waiting Zone". Exhibition "Personal Structures" in Palazzo Bembo, Venice, 60th Venice Biennale.
2024 Limbo. CREA Center for Contemporary Art, Venice.
2025 in Limbo. Ruins Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
