BURAK
In her collection BURAK, Lena Solovyeva presents functional sculptures crafted from metal — copper and stainless steel. Central to the artist’s practice are the connections — between artist and artisan, between material and maker.
Each object is first cut to shape, then formed and subjected to a complex, multi-stage process. Under the influence of air, high temperatures, and chemical reactions, each sculpture develops its own unique surface texture.
Through her work with form, an illusory sense of pliancy and lightness emerges in the object. In the plasticity of these sculptures, one can faintly discern the contours of longforgotten Old Russian household items — buraks, tueskas, and lukoshkas. The half-forgotten names and lost functions of these objects resurface in Solovyeva’s sculptures as a ghostly connection to the culture of the past.
