About the Artist

Born in Penza in 1989. Lives and works in St. Petersburg

In 2009 he graduated from the Penza Art School named after K. A. Savitsky. In 2015 he graduated from the Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after Ilya Glazunov. In 2017 he studied at the Bakshtein Institute of Contemporary Art.

Resident of the workshops in Milyutinsky Lane (2015-2016), Open Studios of the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art (2021-2022), art residence of the FUTURO gallery (2023), art residence in Vyksa (2025). Sergey Karev's works are in private collections in Russia and abroad.

In his work, Karev explores the relevance of the pictorial medium for understanding modernity and applies a new approach to it, relying on the traditions of the academic school. By working with the texture of canvas and paper, painting layers of varying density and color intensity, Sergey Karev creates large-format works, spaces of transition to another, inaccessible in everyday life, psycho-emotional state.
