Tapesty "Grosse Tête"
Osvaldo Vigas was extremely demanding of textile art: throughout his life, he approved and created only 32 tapestries, which makes his every textile work a rare collector's asset.
The "Big Head" (Grosse Tête) is the pinnacle of his textile creativity. The work was carried out in the legendary Atelier 3 workshop using the most sophisticated low-weave technology (basse-lisse) on horizontal machines. The weaver works blindly, seeing only the inside out, and the process itself requires tremendous concentration and jewelry skill.
Despite the extreme complexity of the execution, the basse-lisse technique gives the work fundamental advantages over classical weaving:
- Jewelry plastic lines allows you to convey complex, "ragged" Vigas graphics with absolute accuracy. The black contours of the mask cut into the background without the slightest distortion of the geometry.
- Transfer of a living brush stroke: the threads of the base are laid with such density that the tapestry retains the texture and dynamics of the original picturesque brushstroke, transmitting the ritual energy of the original source.
- Color depth: The dense horizontal weave creates a special matte depth, which makes contrasting color layers look voluminous and do not fade in the exhibition light.
The official Catalogue of the Vigas Foundation confirms that there are only two hand-woven copies of this work in the world. Owning one of the author's 32 textile masterpieces is the highest status in the world of collectible art and an impeccable investment.
Oswaldo Vigas is a key figure of Latin American modernism of the 20th century, along with such giants as Vifredo Lam, Roberto Matta and Rufino Tamayo. He became the first artist to represent Venezuela at the Venice Biennale in 1954. His works are in the collections of major museums in the United States and Europe (for example, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art).
He worked as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist and creator of monumental tapestries. His main achievement is the creation of a unique visual language that combined the techniques of the European avant—garde (Cubism, surrealism) with the primitive culture of Latin America.
The Vigas work market is experiencing a phase of active recovery. The highest prices for his paintings and print art objects have been recorded over the past few years.
Recently, the Oswaldo Vigas Foundation officially launched the full online catalogue, Catalogue Raisonné. Museums in North America, Latin America and Asia are currently most active in expanding their collections through the works of Osvaldo Vigas. After the launch of his digital catalogue, Reason, and a series of worldwide retrospectives, institutional interest in his legacy has grown dramatically.
