Floor lamp Model 3S
The Paolo Tilke Model 3S floor lamp was created in 1971 and revolutionized the world of lighting design.
The ceiling of this lamp, which also regulates the intensity of illumination, is copied from the Soviet design of the helmet on the spacesuit for astronauts, it completely repeats its shape and the movements of closing and opening. The rod and the lampshade of the floor lamp independently rotate 360 degrees around their axis, offering different lighting scenarios: from direct directional light to soft reflection. And the perfect balancing of the structure creates the illusion of weightlessness and the appearance of a space antenna.
The floor lamp became especially popular after appearing in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, which forever cemented its status as an icon of space design. It is now out of production and is a collector's item.
Paolo Tilche (1925-2002) was an Italian classic of furniture and industrial design in the mid-20th century. Born in Egypt into a family of Italian merchants, he moved to Italy, where in 1949 he graduated from the prestigious Milan Technical University with a degree in Architecture.
He started by designing residential and industrial buildings. In 1955, he opened the Arform design store in Milan, which introduced the public to avant-garde interior items.
He has created furniture, fixtures, and plumbing fixtures for brands such as Ideal Standard, De Padova, Guzzini, and Bonacina. His most famous masterpieces are the minimalist leather chair Rea (1956) and the woven rattan armchair Silvia.
He became one of the first popularizers of design on television, hosting the author's program "Il piacere della casa" ("The Pleasure of home").
In the 1960s, together with the artist Miriam Beltrami, he founded the famous eco-hotel Raya on the tiny Italian island of Panarea in Sicily, which has become an iconic holiday destination for bohemians.
