Castle Console
At its core, the Castle series unfolds as a meditation on the tension between radical presence and cultivated restraint. Its radicality resides in the paradoxical act of drawing silence from dense, monumental stone; its refinement, in allowing an ancient material to speak through the syntax of contemporary form.
The bench emerges from a prolonged and deliberate process, where time itself becomes a medium. Each veneer sheet is selected and composed with precision, forming a continuous visual field. The grain reads as an imagined topography - its flowing lines echoing the veining of stone, extending the author’s intent across the surface as a quiet, unbroken gesture.
Carved white onyx anchors the composition, at once luminous and grounded. It does not merely support, but defines a threshold - between weight and lightness, presence and restraint. Within this object, a dialogue unfolds: between wood and stone, warmth and permanence, the hand of the maker and the latent memory of the material itself.
Charles Kalpakian was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1982. After a long collaboration with the prestigious design firms OraIto and Christophe Pillet, in 2011 Charles opened his studio to develop original objects. Over the past decade, he has become a prominent figure in collectible design.
His practice includes collaboration with leading galleries, exhibition institutions and museums, among them Design Miami and the Collectible exhibition in Brussels, where he showcased his 3D–wood experiments created during the lockdown.
The designer's style was influenced by his strong oriental identity, French craft traditions and urban contemporary culture. A pure visual language was born from this radical mix, reminiscent of calligraphy in space. Kalpakian relies on the laws of optical art and optical illusions, and expresses them through sophisticated objects. He rethinks the ideas of arts and crafts in a modern way, especially by using various materials.
