«My gentle beast»
In the porcelain series, Irina Drozd works with antique figurines, complementing them with her own polymer fragments and monster-like forms. These interventions do not simply disrupt the familiar decorativeness of porcelain; they reveal a hidden corporeality, unease, and strangeness within it. Fragile, gallant characters are transformed into hybrid beings in which salon-like beauty coexists with grotesque fantasy and an almost fairy-tale horror.
Irina Drozd is an artist and sculptor. She was born in 1983 in Rzhev, Tver Region.
In her works, Irina Drozd depicts a world of fantasy filled with unusual creatures and characters. Her toy-like monsters are at once endearing and genuinely unsettling; they can be captivating, while those presented to the viewer on silver serving platters may even evoke disgust. In the artist’s sculptures, the refined beauty of antique porcelain figurines collides with something bodily, strange, and almost fairy-tale-like — transforming gallant figures into hybrid beings that balance between tenderness, grotesque, and unease.
