Ghostly swallowtail (Dropping Flowers),
The whimsical, and at times grotesque, butterfly is a prominent figure in Viktor Zhdanov’s graphics and murals.
Within the artist’s universe, its image is almost canonical: long, branching antennae and monstrous wings, an excess of detail, and borders of ornamental plant motifs. Symbols must appear inside the wings — the sun, an eye, a flower, and a heart pierced with a thorn.
Against a translucent painterly background, the Ghostly Swallowtail shields from the scorching sun and drops blooming flowers, which are immediately gathered by sirens — maidens whose bodies have been replaced by insects.
