Butugychag is a former Gulag mine. Personal experiences there transformed into images of symmetrical monsters, capable of conveying the complex emotions experienced during the journey.
Elina used various methods of distortion—digital collage, a physical mirror, water—imitating various mechanisms of oblivion. They deprive the photograph of its documentary quality and give it the right to free interpretation. Perhaps a similar mutation occurs with historical memory, the connection to which is severed. It continues to mutate, gradually dissolving into the natural landscape.

In her artistic practice, Elina works with phenomena and imagery situated at the intersection of knowledge and imagination. Through them, she explores the connections between natural and cultural landscapes, the driving forces of communities, local mythologies, and the fluid nature of memory and communication.
She works with photography, archives, artist books, and textiles, and also creates objects and installations.
