"Barrack" from the project "Bad Place"
Butugychag is a former prison camp mine in the Tenkinsky District of the Magadan Region. The name translates from the Even language as "bad place." According to legend, local nomads noticed that reindeer grazing near the Detrin River would lose their fur and die. From 1937 to 1955, tin ore and later uranium mining were conducted here, primarily by Gulag prisoners. The complex included several camp outposts, a processing plant, adits, brake ramps, and residential barracks. At its peak, the prison population reached seven thousand.
Today, Butugychag is a landscape of decay: excavated earth, sinkholes, remains of rusting rails and barbed wire, and crumbling buildings. The open tailings dam from the uranium plant continues to pollute the soil and water.

In her artistic practice, Elina works with phenomena and imagery situated at the intersection of knowledge and imagination. Through them, she explores the connections between natural and cultural landscapes, the driving forces of communities, local mythologies, and the fluid nature of memory and communication.
She works with photography, archives, artist books, and textiles, and also creates objects and installations.
