Diana Machulina (b. 1981, Luhansk) is an interdisciplinary artist, art critic, and recipient of the Kandinsky Prize. She has participated in exhibitions at the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), the Louvre Museum (Paris), the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art (Moscow), the Museum of Modern Art, Toyama (Japan), the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the State Russian Museum (St. Petersburg), the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow, and the American Academy in Rome.
Diana Machulina’s artistic practice has been largely shaped within the field of monumental art. Her experience of working with scale, the resistance of materials, and physical exertion became formative: from the outset, the artist understood the creative process not merely as the production of an image on a surface, but as an action in space — simultaneously a physical and ethical gesture. Across different media, Machulina repeatedly addresses situations in which familiar concepts such as tradition, labor, religion, and art, as well as images of the heroic and the beautiful, reveal latent conflicts within themselves. Constructing her projects through the collision of diverse cultural codes — ranging from classical mythology and contemporary politics, Soviet utopian language and capitalist aesthetics, to ethnography and the realities of war — the artist invites viewers to perceive culture not as a safe realm of heritage, but as an active force capable not only of preserving life, but also of becoming aggressive.
Her works are held in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), Ecomusée Voltaire (Geneva), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), the Museum of Modern Art, Toyama (Japan), as well as in the Deutsche Bank Collection and private collections in the United Kingdom, Monaco, Russia, the United States, and France.
