Born in Dnepropetrovsk in 1933.
Studied at the Moscow Secondary Art School (1945–1951) and the V.I. Surikov Moscow State Art Institute (graphic department, 1951–1956).
Since 1956, he worked as an illustrator for the publishers Detgiz and Detskaya Literatura, as well as for the magazines Malysh, Murzilka, and Veselye Kartinki. In 1960-1970s, he was part of the “Sretensky Boulevard” group.
One of the founders of Moscow conceptualism. Participant in the first Russian Sotheby’s auction (1988). In the 1990s, he developed the theory and practice of “total installation.” An art theorist and the author of the memoirs “60s–70s… Notes on Unofficial Life in Moscow.”
From 1988, he lived and worked in New York. From 1989, he collaborated with his wife, Emilia Kabakova.
Ilya Kabakov died in 2023 in New York.
