A rare pair of wall sconces "Water leaf"
Each sconce consists of 5 veined leaves opening from above and arranged in a semicircle at different heights, which rest on a base that follows the shape of the foliage, and all are made of gilded bronze.
The author's signature is at the bottom of the edge of the sheet, and inside it is numbered and marked with the CC monogram. Fine hand-minted and patinated in a shade of old gold, gives the metal a deep, shimmering color.
The Maison Charles brand is famous for never using streaming production. Each sheet was cast from bronze by hand, and then minted, polished and coated with gold. There are no two absolutely identical fixtures. Hollywood Regency style is currently at the peak of popularity among the world's leading interior designers. The sconce by Charles is the standard of French luxury in the second half of the 20th century.
Chrystiane Charles is one of the most prominent French women sculptors and bronze painters of the second half of the 20th century. Her name has become synonymous with exquisite botanical plastics and has turned the idea of interior lighting design upside down. She has been in charge of the Dom Charlet factory for 25 years and the highlight of her career was receiving the prestigious Golden Lamp award at the International Lighting Salon in Paris for the Water Leaf light series. Charle's house, under Christiane's leadership, created not just light, but status symbols. All the items were produced in strictly limited editions, each piece was personally checked by the artist, after which the metal was engraved with her signature and an individual serial number. This instantly transformed utilitarian lamps into the category of high collectible art. In the second half of the 20th century, the possession of these lamps and sconces was a sign of absolute elitism.
The Charlet House has never worked on an assembly line. The vast majority of Mid-Century objects were created for specific luxury projects, private housing in Paris, luxury hotels or commissioned by famous decorators. When buying such a sconce, the collector did not purchase a lamp, but an original signed sculpture from a limited edition, which only grows in price over time.
