Mystical crucifixion
Behind the Mirror (Derrière le Miroir) is a famous art publication that was produced in France from 1946 to 1982 by Émile Maeght, the founder, editor, and publisher of the magazine. A total of 253 issues were published. The publication included many wonderful texts and superb illustrations—mostly color lithographs by artists whose works were shown at Maeght’s gallery. Among them: Henri-Georges Adam, Pierre Alechinsky, Jean Bazaine, Georges Braque, Paul Beri, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Wassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Jacques Monory, and others.
Marc Chagall is one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th century, whose work unites memories of the Jewish village of Vitebsk, love for family, and a rich folk heritage. His paintings often feel magical and poetic: figures float above landscapes, the hero and his beloved hold hands, and toys, animals, and musical motifs weave together into a single tapestry. Main motifs: memory and nostalgia for his homeland, scenes of love and family life, ballet and music, religious and folk subjects, the symbolism of birds, flowers, and duets of human and celestial figures. Technique and style: bright, saturated colors and clear outlines; simple, decorative forms; a sense of compositional lightness and dynamic movement; the "floating" or "hovering" principle of composition is often used, where objects and figures hang or whirl in the air.
