About the Artist

Semyon Galinov (b. 2001) is an artist working across painting, drawing, and object-based practice. His works often originate in staged photographs produced by the artist himself, as well as in literary narratives and poetic imagery.

Galinov’s work brings together the artistic traditions of European and Russian painting with the visual language of punk zines and underground "samizdat". This combination is expressed through the pronounced materiality of the image, restrained expressiveness, and an underlying tension between classical form and the aesthetics of independent culture.

A significant part of the artist’s practice consists of large-scale realist paintings executed in an austere, often monochromatic palette. The subjects of his works are drawn from his immediate circle; within the pictorial space, however, they lose their specificity as figures from everyday life and acquire timeless, almost archetypal qualities.

Scale, composition, and lighting create a sense of unease and alienation in these works. Familiar figures and situations are transformed into dreamlike scenes in which reality exists at the intersection of personal memory, literary imagery, and inner vision.
