About the Work
About the Artist

In these works, the ceramicist acts as a painter, but instead of canvas, he uses a layer of clay, and instead of paint, he utilizes the plasticity of clay and glaze. The wall-mounted pieces are abstract, allowing the artist to better appreciate the rich textures of firing without being distracted by the subject matter.

Dmitry Ilyinsky (b. 1964) is a ceramic artist based in Saint Petersburg. In 1992, he graduated from the Department of Ceramics and Glass at the St. Petersburg Mukhina Higher School of Art and Design (now the Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design), where he has taught since 1995 and currently serves as Associate Professor. His artistic practice explores the expressive potential of high-fire and wood-fired ceramics, operating at the intersection of functional objects and sculptural form. A recipient of numerous Russian and international awards, Ilyinsky is also a member of the Krater artist group. His works are held in museum and private collections across Russia, Estonia, France, and China.
