'Symposion' series
"Symposium" was created specifically for the Cosmoscow fair. It is based on scenes from ancient Greek feasts. The series consists of 17 modules, each featuring participants in a symposium or objects typical of the event, alluding to the culture and everyday life of Ancient Greece. These images include amphorae, musical instruments, and the drinking game kottabos, in which participants threw the remains of wine from a kylix at a designated target.
The works were created using a technique called sintering glass chips from opaque glass. Particular attention was paid to the surface texture—glass paints, abrasive powders, clay, and soda were used during the firing process to create a shattered effect.
Yulia Momotova is an artist based between Rostov-on-Don and Saint Petersburg. Living in the Northern Black Sea region, the territory of the former Bosporan Kingdom, has shaped the central focus of her practice: an exploration of the influence of Antiquity on contemporary culture, much of which is rooted in the legacy of Hellenism.
By incorporating well-known classical narratives and motifs into her work, Momotova draws connections between past and present. Archaic symbols and attributes are reinterpreted through a contemporary visual language, revealing their continued relevance within modern cultural contexts.
Glass is the artist’s primary medium. She works across a wide range of kiln-formed glass techniques, from low-temperature firing of glass granules (pâte de verre) to high-temperature deep slumping. This technical versatility allows her to achieve a rich variety of textures and surface qualities, expanding the expressive potential of the material.
