A Little Longer
KM Khushboo is among the most technically rigorous printmakers of her generation in India. Working in etching, drypoint, and woodcut she has built a practice around a question that is deceptively simple: what happens to an image when you refuse to look away? "Jise main aur der tak dekhna chahti hoon" - that which I want to look at for longer - is where she locates the starting point of her work: an attempt to stay with a fleeting presence, somewhere between appearance and perception, attending to how an image shifts the longer one holds it.
Her work at Cosmoscow is a woodcut into whose printed surface she has drawn directly, making the piece singular and unrepeatable neither pure print nor pure drawing, but something that lives precisely in the space between. It is a fitting embodiment of the question the work asks. The matrix survives; the mark is pressed, transferred, then elaborated by hand. What remains is an image that keeps shifting. This inquiry connects to the deeper understanding she has carried since early mornings sketching at the Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi, watching cremation fires return bodies to their elements: that creation and dissolution are the same gesture, merely reversed. Recipient of the Jeram Patel Award (2024) and the Manorama Young Printmakers Grant (2025), Khushboo has exhibited at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Mumbai.
