Yayoi Kusama works with sculpture, performance, and installation. The sources of her creativity are minimalism, surrealism, the aesthetics of pop art, and abstract expressionism.
She has exhibited alongside Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. Kusama represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 1993, 1998, and 1999, and large retrospectives of her work have been held in the United States and Japan.
Kusama was very ambitious and created a vivid image. During her stay in the United States, she quickly earned a reputation as a leader of the avant-garde movement. It was then that Yayoi Kusama began covering surfaces—such as walls, floors, and canvases—with polka dots, and later applying the same motif to everyday objects and even to her nude assistants, which became her signature pattern.
Yayoi Kusama is one of the most influential contemporary Japanese artists, a painter, sculptor, and author of installations, performances, films, and literary texts, and one of the most recognizable figures in 20th–21st-century art. Her work combines the experience of postwar Japan, training in nihonga (traditional Japanese painting), the New York avant-garde, minimalism, Pop Art, feminist art, psychedelic culture, happenings, fashion, and mass visual culture. Kusama has created her own artistic universe, based on repetition, infinity, mirrors, nets, dots, pumpkins, and the idea of self-erasure in the infinite space of images.
