About the Artist

In her practice, Deborah Metsch explores themes of memory, culture, and personal experience, often drawing on impressions from her travels. In recent years, she has been developing a body of work that combines photography with expressive, painterly interventions. The process begins with a large-format black-and-white photograph created using the gelatin-silver process. This base image is then subjected to further treatment: chemicals are applied to oxidize and alter the surface, after which pigments, solvents, paints, and varnishes may be added. The result is a series of multilayered palimpsests—works in which new meanings emerge as certain elements are brought to light while others are obscured or distorted.

The artist also has a track record of collaboration. In 2026, for instance, she completed a four-week residency in Bangkok as part of the FV39 project. There, she worked closely with the Atelier Pichita team, researching Thai textile traditions, local craftsmanship, and contemporary design. This led to collaborative pieces at the intersection of art and fashion—works in which beads, fabrics, and structural details resonate with the rituals of dressing and adornment.
