Evgeny Antufiev is one of the leading Russian artists of his generation. A graduate of the Institute of Contemporary Art Problems (Moscow), he received the Kandinsky Prize for Young Artist. Project of the Year at the age of 23, becoming the youngest recipient in the history of the award.
Antufiev's practice is distinguished by its original engagement with materials. His interest in archaeology and regional ethnographic research forms the foundation of many of his projects. Drawing on an anthropological approach, he has developed a distinctive personal mythology that reinterprets elements of traditional crafts and mythological figures from diverse cultures. His works investigate the role of materials—including stone, bone, wood, amber, and bronze—in shaping human culture. The worlds Antufiev creates exist at the intersection of nature and culture, legend and history, reality and fiction, while his subtle use of kitsch aesthetics lends his work a distinctive sense of irony.
Antufiev's works are held in numerous public and private collections, including Tate Modern (London, UK), Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), Collezione Maramotti (Reggio Emilia, Italy), the Credit Suisse Corporate Collection, M HKA – Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (Antwerp, Belgium), the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow (MAMM), and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA).
